Can't create revision/resubmission - can't find previous document

The submission fails with ScholarOne error code 16.

Provided document_replaces does not exist

Why it happens…

Typically, the ScholarOne version of the submission was deleted by a confused author or withdrawn by a confused editor.

To resolve:

There aren’t many options for Author Portal when it comes to this. The option of last resort is to use the Author Portal Resubmit as New action. This will cause Author Portal to repackage the submission as an initial submission and send it to ScholarOne.

Repackaging means that revision-specific elements, such as the author response, are moved into the regular files and are listed as supplemental info not for publication. ScholarOne handles this as a brand new submission with a new Manuscript ID, which will have to be manually linked as a companion paper.
