Submission States (Statuses)

Submissions can have one of the following states:

Accepted The peer review system has sent a signal to Author Portal that the submission has been accepted for publication. Terminal state. No further actions available. Yes.
Accepted (Final Files) The peer review system has sent a signal to Author Portal that the submission has been accepted for publication. Terminal state. No further actions available. Yes.
Deleted The user or an administrator using the proxy mode for a user has deleted the submission. Deleted submissions do not appear in the author UI and are only visible to administrators. Terminal state. No further actions available. No.
Draft Submission is still in draft version and has not been completed by the author or submitting agent. Proxy as the author to complete submission or troubleshoot. Yes.
Draft Unsubmitted The submission has been returned to the author in the peer review system by the editorial office. Proxy as the author to complete submission or troubleshoot. No.
In Revision The submission has been returned to the submitter so that they make changes and submit a modified manuscript.

Rejected The peer review system has sent a signal to Author Portal that the submission has been rejected for publication. Terminal state. No further actions available. Yes.
Reject with Resubmit The submission has been rejected, but the editorial office has offered an opportunity for the author to resubmit after significant revisions. Proxy as the author to complete submission or troubleshoot. No.
Replaced The submission has been resubmitted as new by an Author Portal admin and replaced by a newer submission. The submission card includes a link at the top to the submission that replaced it. Proxy as the author to view the replaced submission. Yes.
Rescinded A decision has been issued in ScholarOne and then rescinded. In Author Portal, the submission will continue to have a state of Rescinded until a new decision is issued in ScholarOne. Proxy as the author to view the submission. Yes.
Revision Unsubmitted The revision has been returned to the author in the peer review system by the editorial office. Proxy as the author to complete revision or troubleshoot. No.
S1M Status Mismatch The submission state in Author Portal does not match the corresponding state in ScholarOne.

Submission Failed From the author's perspective, the submission process has been completed. However, the submission has not been ingested by S1M. S1M runs import every 15 minutes and after 2 attempts is flagged as failed if the article is not imported. See the related information for troubleshooting tips for failed submissions.

Submission Hold An administrator has set the journal, or the Author Portal platform as on hold, holding all submissions in Author Portal without attempting to send them to the external peer review system.
Note: This is usually done in coordination with new code releases or because of temporary issues with the external peer review system.
Once on hold is removed, submissions will be sent to the external peer review system for ingestion.

Submission Pending The user has completed the submission in Author Portal where it waits to be ingested by S1M. S1M runs import every 15 minutes. No.
Submission Postprocessing Creation and deposit of the submission package to the peer review system.

Under Review The submission has been checked in from the external peer review system, and remains in that state until an editorial decision such as accept, reject, revise, withdraw, or unsubmit is made. This state is also displayed for submissions that have the Revised or Resubmitted status in ScholarOne. Proxy as the author. Yes.
Withdrawn Author has withdrawn submission for consideration, or an editor has withdrawn the paper on the author's behalf. Proxy as the author. Yes.
