Why it happens

The most likely reason this issue occurs is because ORCID allows multiple email addresses to be associated with the same ORCID iD, whereas Research Exchange allows only a single email address to be associated with each Research Exchange account.

For example:

You have a single ORCID iD.

Your following two email addresses are associated with your ORCID iD:

You submit a manuscript using Research Exchange, creating a Research Exchange account with [email protected]. You associate your ORCID iD with your Research Exchange account.

Some time later, you begin to submit a second manuscript using Research Exchange, creating a second Research Exchange account with [email protected]. You attempt to associate your ORCID iD with this second Research Exchange account, and receive the Federated identity returned by ORCID is already linked to another user error.
